Short bio Arthur Honegger
Full biography Arthur Honegger
Arthur Honegger was a Swiss composer who lived a large part of his life in France. He was born on March 10, 1892, in Le Havre, Seine-Infrieure (now Seine-Maritime), France, and died on November 27, 1955, in Paris. Honegger was a prolific composer who wrote in many genres, including symphonies, operas, songs, music for ballet, and film scores.
He made his Paris compositional debut in 1916 and was commissioned to write the score for a mimed ballet in 1918. Honegger's most famous work is probably his oratorio, "King David," which he composed in 1921. Some of his other notable works include his Symphony No. 2, "Pacific 167" (also known as "Liturgical Symphony"), and his opera "Antigone."
Honegger was part of a group of six young French composers known as "Les Six," who were active in the 1920s and 1930s. The group's members were united by their rejection of contemporary German music and their desire to create a distinctively French style of music.
During World War II , Honegger chose to remain in Paris and joined a resistance group, although he also wrote for German-owned newspapers. He received many awards and honors throughout his career, including the French Legion of Honor and the Grand Prix National de la Musique.
Overall, Arthur Honegger was a talented composer who left an indelible mark on the world of music. His works are still performed and celebrated today, and he remains an important figure in the history of French and Swiss music.
