O'Riada's music was heavily influenced by traditional Irish music, and he is widely credited as one of the pioneers of the Irish traditional music revival of the 1960s. Through his work with the group Ceoltóirí Chualann, he helped to popularize traditional Irish music and bring it back into mainstream consciousness.
In addition to his work with Ceoltóirí Chualann, O'Riada composed extensively for film and television, including the soundtrack for the iconic Stanley Kubrick film "Barry Lyndon".
