Sandford C. Faulkner was a prominent American composer, musician, and performer in the mid-19th century. Born on February 24, 1803, in Kentucky, Sandford showed a great aptitude for music from a young age. He began his musical career as a guitarist and soon became known for his unique playing style, often playing with his feet.
Faulkner's most famous composition is "Camp Town Races," written in 1850. The song was an instant hit and became one of the most widely known and performed pieces in the world. The melody was so popular that it was even used as the tune for political campaign songs.
Faulkner was also a talented performer and often traveled around the country performing at various events. He was famous for his "banjo concerts," in which he would perform on the banjo, guitar, and violin, showcasing his remarkable musical talents.
Faulkner continued to compose and perform until his death on March 14, 1874, in Ohio, at the age of 71.
