Rudolf Mauersberger was a German choral conductor and composer born on January 29 , 1889, and passed away on February 22, 1971, at the age of 82. He had a younger brother Erhard who was also a conductor and composer. Rudolf was regarded as one of the foremost German choral conductors and composers during the years between the two World Wars.
Mauersberger was the conductor of the Dresdner Kreuzchor, also known as the Dresden Boys' Choir, in the years after World War II, a position he took over from Willy Burkhard. He led the choir into rebuilding after the destruction of the Kreuzkirche during the bombing of Dresden. One of the most famous works performed by the choir under his leadership was his own composition, the Dresden Requiem, which he wrote in 1945 as a tribute to the victims of the bombing.
In addition to his work as a conductor, Mauersberger was also a prolific composer, with over 500 works to his name. His compositions focused primarily on sacred choral music, with a style that blended traditional techniques with modern forms.
