John Henry Maunder (21 February 1858 - 21 January 1920) was an English composer and organist best known for his cantata "Olivet to Calvary". He studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and served as a theatre composer during which time he wrote the operetta 'Daisy Dingle'. Maunder wrote about 20 church anthems , 10 cantatas, several carols, and tunes for around 30 hymns. "Olivet to Calvary" is one of his most famous works, which was first performed in 1904. The cantata tells the story of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, and features a series of beautiful arias, recitatives, and choruses. Other notable compositions of his include "Crossing the Bar," "The Holy Child," and "The Story of Bethlehem." John Henry Maunder passed away on 21 January 1920, but his contributions to music continue to be celebrated to this day.
