Roman Vlad (29 December 1919 – 21 September 2013) was a Romanian-born Italian composer , pianist, writer, and musicologist. After World War II, Vlad moved to Italy where he became known for his work as a concert pianist, composer, and speaker, particularly in the field of avant-garde music. He was also a writer and essayist on music, with more than 20 books to his credit.
Vlad's compositions were characterized by his use of the twelve-note technique, and he was known for his distinctive and innovative harmonic language. He also wrote extensively on the music of Stravinsky, with whom he had a close personal and professional relationship. In addition to his work as a composer, pianist, and writer, Vlad was also a respected musicologist and served as the chairman of the International Society for Contemporary Music.
Vlad's works were performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States, and he received numerous awards for his contributions to music. His most famous works include his Symphony No. 1, which was premiered in 1958, and his film score for the 1972 Italian film The Seduction of Mimi. Vlad was a prolific composer throughout his career, and his work continued to be performed and studied long after his death in 2013.
