Richard James Shephard was a British composer, educator, and Director of Development and Chamberlain. He was born on March 20, 1949, and passed away on February 20, 2021, at the age of 71. Shephard was a widely renowned composer and his compositions were frequently performed in churches and cathedrals in the UK and US.
Shephard was deeply rooted in the British choral tradition, and his compositions ranged from hymns to anthems, carols, and liturgical music. In 2009, he was commissioned to write an Ode on the 350th anniversary of the Book of Common Prayer , which was performed at Westminster Abbey.
Apart from being a composer, Shephard was also an educator and the former headmaster of the Minster School. He was a pillar of the musical and educational community and an advocate for music education. A charitable foundation has been established to continue his musical and educational work.
Shephard received several honors during his life for his contributions to music and education, including the MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) and the DL (Deputy Lieutenant).
