Arthur Shepherd was an American composer and conductor born on February 19, 1880, and passed away on January 12, 1958. His father, William N. B. Shepherd, was a composer who wrote the hymn "Give Us Room That We May Dwell." Arthur Shepherd is one of many famous composers , including Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven, who have left a lasting impact on music history.
Shepherd was a member of the Cleveland Composers' Guild, an organization dedicated to promoting contemporary music and bringing it to a wider audience. He is best known for his works based on Native American themes and his operettas , which were popular during his time.
Shepherd collaborated with many artists throughout his career. He worked with William S. Gilbert to write his first opera, Thespis, in 1871. He also published works by other composers, including Arthur Farwell.
Shepherd was a gifted composer, and his work is still celebrated today. Two Shepherd School faculty members , Arthur Gottschalk and Ellsworth Milburn , were also composers and were recognized with the prestigious ASCAP Award. Arthur Shepherd passed away from surgery complications at the age of 77.
