He was the son of Eduard Franck, a famous composer, concert pianist, and teacher, and also the father of the composer and conductor Thomas Franck. The bulk of Richard Franck's compositions were written for solo piano, but he also wrote for orchestral and vocal ensembles and composed chamber music as well. He was particularly well-regarded for his Piano Trio No.1, Op.20, which received high praise from critics.
