Short bio Reinhard Keiser
Full biography Reinhard Keiser
Reinhard Keiser (1674-1739) was a German opera composer who attained popularity during the Baroque period. He is primarily known for his works in the Hamburg opera scene, where he wrote over a hundred operas throughout his career. Keiser's operas were known for bridging the styles of the late Baroque and the Rococo galant style. Keiser's compositions were often set to Italian librettos, which was common for opera composers in Germany at the time.
While Keiser was once considered one of the greatest opera composers in the world, his popularity declined in the 18th century. However, in recent years, scholars have revisited Keiser's works, and he has regained some recognition for his contributions to the development of Baroque opera.
In addition to his opera works, Keiser also composed cantatas and oratorios. Among his most famous works are "Nero and Octavia" and "Croxall's Fables," which were praised for their dramatic and musical innovations.
Overall, Reinhard Keiser was an accomplished composer whose works contributed greatly to the development of German opera during the Baroque period. Despite his popularity waning after his death, his oeuvre remains a valuable and intriguing window into the musical world of the time.
