He attended Birmingham-Southern College and graduated with a degree in music composition.

Ray's musical career started as a keyboard player in the house band for the TV show "The Nashville Network," and he later went on to work with several famous musicians, including Ray Charles and Duke Ellington Orchestra. He has also served as the Director of Student Jazz Programs at the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame and as an artist-in-residence at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

As a composer , Ray has written and arranged music for several TV shows and events, including the NFL Super Bowl halftime show, the Olympics, and the World Series. Additionally, he has produced and recorded several albums of his own music, which showcase his wide range of musical abilities.
