Short bio Peter Schat
Full biography Peter Schat
Peter Schat (1935-2003) was a Dutch composer who studied with Pierre Boulez and Karlheinz Stockhausen. He was a central figure in the development of serialism and electronic music in the Netherlands. Schat wrote over 50 compositions during his lifetime.
His most notable works include "Hymn of Light," "To You," and "Symphony." He was also known for his work on "Tone Clock," a musical theory that he developed and wrote about in his book of the same name.
Schat was also a teacher and influenced many composers of his time, including Louis Andriessen and Reinbert de Leeuw. He was a member of the group of Dutch musicians known as "The Five" alongside Andriessen, de Leeuw, Misha Mengelberg, and Jan van Vlijmen.
Schat's music was characterized by its use of innovative electronic techniques, rigorous formal structures, and a strong sense of individualism. He died in 2003 in Amsterdam, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most significant Dutch composers of the 20th century.
