Short bio Percy Grainger
Full biography Percy Grainger
Percy Grainger was an Australian-born composer, pianist, and conductor who lived from 1882 to 1961. He is recognized for his contributions to classical music as well as his interest in collecting and setting folk music. Grainger was a versatile musician who wrote music for a wide variety of ensembles, from solo piano pieces to large orchestral works. Some of his most famous compositions include "Country Gardens," "Irish Tune from County Derry," and "Lincolnshire Posy."
In addition to composing music, Grainger was also an accomplished pianist. He toured extensively throughout his career, performing in both solo recitals and with orchestras. During World War I, he served in the U.S. Army as a bandsman, performing with the 15th Coast Artillery Corps. Grainger was also an inventor, and he designed several unique instruments, including two types of "free music machines" that could produce sounds without the need for physical contact.
One of Grainger's most important contributions to music was his work as a collector and arranger of folk music. He was particularly interested in preserving the traditional music of his native Australia, but he also collected songs from other cultures, including England, Ireland, and the United States. Grainger believed that folk music was an important part of a nation's cultural heritage, and he saw great value in using folk tunes as the basis for more elaborate compositions.
Despite his many accomplishments, Grainger was a controversial figure in his time due to his outspoken views and unconventional lifestyle. He was an advocate for free love and expressed admiration for Nazi Germany, which drew criticism from many of his contemporaries. Despite this controversy, his contributions to music have endured, and he is remembered today as a pioneering composer, pianist, and folk music collector.
