Paul Gilson was a Belgian composer and musician born on June 15th, 1865 in Brussels. He is considered one of the most important Belgian composers of his time. Gilson's output was prolific and included many works for winds, both in large and small combinations. He studied organ and composition and eventually became a professor of composition at the Brussels Conservatory.

Gilson's music is characterized by a strong sense of melody , a skillful use of orchestration, and an interest in incorporating traditional Belgian folk melodies in his works. Some of his notable compositions include "The Sea," "Pome symphonique en forme d'ouverture," and "La mer: Sailor's Dance".

Despite his success, Gilson's output decreased after 1905, after which time he wrote increasingly about music in theory rather than composing new works. Gilson passed away on April 3rd, 1942 in Schaarbeek, Belgium. Today, his works are still performed and celebrated by musicians and enthusiasts around the world.
