Jan van Gilse was a Dutch composer born on May 11, 1881, in Rotterdam, Netherlands. He came from a family of composers, with his father being an organist and composer as well. Van Gilse was exposed to music from an early age and began his musical studies with his father.

He later studied at the Cologne Conservatory and the Leipzig Conservatory under well-known composers such as Max Reger and Gustav Mahler. Van Gilse's musical style was heavily influenced by Mahler, and he became known for his expansive and emotionally charged compositions.

Van Gilse's works were mostly inspired by literature, and he often collaborated with writers to create librettos for his operas. One of his most famous works is his opera, "Thijl," which is based on a Dutch legend. It premiered in 1956, long after van Gilse's death in 1944.

Van Gilse was also a politically active figure, and his compositions often reflected his beliefs. He was involved in the resistance against the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands during World War II, and as a result, he went into hiding in 1942. Unfortunately, he was eventually discovered and died in a concentration camp in 1944, leaving behind a rich legacy of musical works.

Overall, Jan van Gilse was a talented and passionate composer who left his mark on Dutch music with his emotionally charged compositions and collaborative approach to music-making.
