Full biography Paul Chihara
Paul Chihara is a Japanese-American composer who was born in Seattle, Washington in 1938. He is known for his work in both concert and film music, as well as for his contributions to the world of musical education. Chihara received his doctorate degree (D.M.A.) from Cornell University and went on to become the founder and chairman of the UCLA Visual Media graduate program , which focuses on training composers for film and Broadway musicals.
Chihara has won numerous awards throughout his career, including an Emmy for his score to the television series "China Beach" and a Pulitzer Prize nomination for his opera "The Tempest." He was also the first composer-in-residence for the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra , and he has written music for many other well-known orchestras throughout the country.
In addition to his work in film and concert music, Chihara has also composed for ballets and operas. His music for "The Tempest" is particularly noteworthy because it was based on themes originally scored by the 17th century English composer Henry Purcell.
Chihara's musical style is influenced by a wide range of sources , including both Western classical music and Japanese traditional music. He is recognized for his ability to blend these different musical traditions together in unique and innovative ways, creating music that is both engaging and thought-provoking.
