Full biography Norman Dello Joio
Norman Dello Joio was an American composer who was born on January 24, 1913, in New York City, New York, USA and passed away on July 24, 2008, in East Hampton, New York. He came from a family of musicians who emigrated from Italy and had a career spanned over half a century. He was a prolific composer who wrote dozens of pieces for chorus, orchestra, solo, and chamber ensembles. His works covered a wide spectrum of musical genres and styles, ranging from the neoclassical to the avant-garde.
Dello Joio received numerous prestigious awards throughout his career. In 1957, he won the Pulitzer Prize in Music for his composition "Meditations on Ecclesiastes". He also won a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1947 and received an honorary doctorate from the New England Conservatory of Music in 1973. He was also a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters.
Dello Joio's music has been performed by many prominent orchestras and ensembles, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Philadelphia Orchestra. He was a professor of music at several institutions, including the Manhattan School of Music, Boston University, and the Juilliard School.
In addition to his work as a composer, Dello Joio was also an author, writing several books about music, including "The Anatomy of the Orchestra", published in 1985, and "The Diatonic Modes in Modern Music", published in 1972.
