He went on to study music at the University of Cape Town, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree, majoring in piano and composition.

As a composer, Neil has written numerous works for orchestra, choir, and chamber ensembles, which have been performed both in South Africa and abroad. Notable works include "Three Songs for the Southern Seasons," "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square," and "Images and Reflections for 2 Pianos."
