Nicolas Dalayrac (1753-1809) was a French composer known for his contributions to the genre of opra-comique, a form of French opera that incorporates spoken dialogue alongside musical numbers. He composed over 56 operas during his lifetime, with many of his popular works being performed both in France and abroad.

Dalayrac began his musical education as a sub-lieutenant at Versailles, where he studied composition and began writing chamber pieces , including string quartets. He later met several notable musicians such as the Chevalier de Saint-George and Honoré Langlé, who further inspired and taught him composition.

One of Dalayrac's most famous works is "Nina, ou La folle par amour," an opra-comique in one act that premiered in 1786 ). The opera tells the story of Nina, a young woman who falls in love with a man she believes to be her savior, only to discover that he is already married. The opera was a success in its time and has been revived frequently in modern times.

During the French Revolution, Dalayrac composed patriotic songs for special occasions. However, despite his ability to adapt to the changing political climate, many of his works were targeted by critics for being too sentimental and lacking in intellectual depth.

Dalayrac's legacy as a composer continues to be celebrated today, with several of his works still being performed and recorded by modern musicians. Overall, his contributions to the opra-comique genre and French classical music in general remain significant and noteworthy.
