Nicola Sala was an Italian composer and music theorist who lived from April 7 , 1713, to August 31, 1801. He is best known for his contributions to music theory and for being one of the leading proponents of the partimento tradition, a teaching method that emphasized the study of harmony through improvisation.

Sala wrote over 50 operas, as well as a number of instrumental works and chamber music. His first known composition is the opera "Vologeso," which was staged in Rome in 1742. He also wrote a number of sacred works, including oratorios and cantatas. Sala was known for his unique style, which blended Italian and French influences, and for his innovative approaches to harmony and counterpoint.

In addition to his work as a composer, Sala was also a respected music theorist. He wrote a number of treatises and instructional manuals, including "Treatise on Harmony" and "All the Rules of Partimenti for Beginners." His work on partimenti helped to cement this teaching method as a foundational practice for music education in Italy in the 18th century.

Despite his significant contributions to music theory and composition, Sala's work gradually fell out of favor in the 19th century. However, in recent years, there has been renewed interest in his work, particularly among musicologists and historians of music education. Today, Sala is recognized as an important figure in the history of music theory and as a pioneer of the partimento tradition.
