Nicanor Abelardo was a renowned Filipino composer who is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of modern Philippine music. He was born on February 7, 1893, in San Miguel, Bulacan, Philippines. Abelardo was gifted with a musical talent at a young age and began studying music with his father, Valentin. He later pursued formal music education at the Philippine Normal School (now known as the Philippine Normal University), where he honed his skills in music theory and composition.
Abelardo's music is often described as having a unique Filipino sound, drawing inspiration from the traditional Filipino music. His compositions reflect the nobility and elegance of classic European symphonies. Most of his works were written for the piano and voice, and he is particularly famous for his love songs, which are still popular in the Philippines today. Some of his most famous works include "Mutya ng Pasig," "Nasaan Ka, Irog?," and "Bituing Marikit."
He was awarded the title “National Artist of the Philippines” in 1987, posthumously, in recognition of his contributions to Philippine music.
