Morton Subotnick is an American composer and musician who is widely considered to be one of the pioneers of electronic music. He was born on April 14, 1933 in Los Angeles, California. He studied music at the University of Denver and Mills College in Oakland, California.
In the 1960s, Subotnick began experimenting with electronic music, using tape recorders and other electronic devices to create novel and otherworldly sounds. He was the first composer to be commissioned to write an electronic composition expressly for the phonograph medium , producing "Silver Apples of the Moon," which was released in 1967.
Subotnick has continued to push the boundaries of electronic music throughout his career, inventing new tools and techniques for generating sound. He has collaborated with numerous other musicians and artists, including Suzanne Ciani and Bruce Nauman. His work has been performed all over the world, and he has won numerous awards and honors for his contributions to the field of electronic music.
Subotnick is also a talented educator who has taught at a number of schools and universities throughout his career. He was a co-founder of the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California, and served as the director of its music program from 1969 to 1972.
