Mikael Tariverdiev was a prominent Soviet composer of Armenian descent , known for his extensive body of work, which includes over 100 romances and four operas , as well as scores for films and television. He was born on August 15, 1931, in Tbilisi, Georgia, and began his musical education at an early age. He studied at the Moscow Conservatory and later taught at the Gnessin Institute.

Despite being virtually unknown outside of his native Russia , Tariverdiev was nothing if not a tour-de-force. He wrote scores for over a hundred films, and his music was widely celebrated in his home country. He was particularly known for his work on the series of movies known as the "Irony of Fate", for which he provided both the score and the songs. He also composed the music for other popular Soviet films, television series, and dramas.

Tariverdiev was a master of many different musical styles, and his work draws from an eclectic blend of influences, ranging from classical music to jazz. He was admired for his use of unconventional instruments and the imaginative arrangements he created for each piece. In addition to his work as a composer, Tariverdiev was also an accomplished pianist and organist.
