Short bio Melchior Schildt
Full biography Melchior Schildt
Melchior Schildt was a German composer and organist who lived from around 1592 to 1667. He was born in Hanover, and is known for his organ compositions. Schildt was a student of Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, a renowned Dutch composer and organist, and his music shows a strong influence from his teacher.
Although Schildt is not as well known as some of his contemporaries, his music is considered to be of high quality and displays a high level of technical skill. His surviving works include chorale settings, preludes, and fantasias. Many of his works feature complex ornamental passages and variations, which require a high level of virtuosity from the performer.
Schildt's compositions are notable for their combination of Sweelinck's influence with the more decorative and virtuosic style of the North German school of organ playing. Schildt's music is considered to be an important part of the North German baroque organ tradition, which would later be carried on by composers such as Dietrich Buxtehude and Johann Sebastian Bach.
Today, Schildt's music is still performed and recorded, and is appreciated for its technical complexity and expressive power. His works have been featured on various recordings, including performances by Annette Richards, Bernard Foccroulle, and Ewald Demeyere.
