Max von Schillings (1868-1933) was a German composer and conductor who played an influential role in the world of classical music during the early 20th century. Born in Düren, Germany, von Schillings initially studied law before turning his attention to music. He enrolled in the Conservatory of Music in Munich where he studied under the tutelage of the renowned composer, Franz von Lenbach.
Von Schillings began his career as a conductor, working in various cities across Germany, including Munich, Frankfurt, and Berlin. He quickly established a reputation as a gifted conductor, earning accolades for his interpretations of works by Richard Wagner and other German composers.
As a composer, von Schillings is best known for his opera works, which were influenced by the operatic styles of Wagner and Richard Strauss. His most famous opera, "Mona Lisa," was premiered at the Royal Opera House in Dresden in 1915, and was well received by audiences and critics alike.
In addition to his work as a conductor and composer, von Schillings also served as the director of the Opera House in Berlin from 1918 to 1925, and later as the director of the Munich Conservatory. He was a proponent of German nationalistic music and believed that music could play a significant role in shaping the cultural identity of Germany.
