May Aufderheide was a pioneering American composer and pianist who made significant contributions to the ragtime genre in the early 20th century. Born in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1888, Aufderheide began studying music at an early age. She became interested in ragtime while attending high school, and by age 18, she had composed her first rag, "Dusty."

Aufderheide's music was unique in that it blended the syncopated rhythms of ragtime with classical European forms. Her compositions were characterized by their intricate harmonies, lively rhythms, and memorable melodies. Some of her most well-known works include "The Thriller", "The Reindeer Rag", and "The Buzzer Rag". Her musical style was often compared to that of fellow ragtime composers like Scott Joplin and James Scott.

Despite being a woman in a male-dominated field, Aufderheide achieved a great deal of success during her lifetime. She regularly performed her own compositions for audiences in Indianapolis and other cities in the Midwest, and her sheet music sold well across the country.

In addition to her music, Aufderheide was also an accomplished artist, and many of her ragtime compositions were inspired by her love of painting. She even created her own cover art for her sheet music.

May Aufderheide passed away in 1972, but her contribution to ragtime music lives on. Her legacy is a testament to her creativity, talent, and determination to succeed in a field that was traditionally closed off to women.
