Full biography Mark-Anthony Turnage
Mark-Anthony Turnage is an English composer born on June 10, 1960, in Grays, Essex, UK. He is an accomplished composer and writer, known for his work in the opera, classical and contemporary music scenes.
Turnage has written several operas during his career, including Greek, The Silver Tassie, Anna Nicole, and Coraline. His music draws influence from a wide range of sources, including jazz, rock, and contemporary classical music. He has also composed works for orchestras, ensembles, and soloists, including his violin concerto, "Mambo, Blues, and Tarantella," and his trumpet concerto, "From the Wreckage."
Turnage has received numerous awards and recognitions for his work, including the Royal Philharmonic Society Award for Large-Scale Composition in 1990 and the Ivor Novello Award in 2016. He was also appointed Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2022 New Year Honours for services to music.
Apart from his compositions, Turnage has also been actively involved in music education. He has worked as a professor and guest lecturer at several universities and conservatories, including the Royal College of Music in London, the Tanglewood Music Centre in Massachusetts, and the Darmstadt International Summer Sessions for New Music.
In addition to his works for classical music, Turnage has also composed music for film and television, including the soundtrack for the film "The House That Jack Built" and the BBC series "The Attic: The Hiding of Anne Frank."
