Mark George Alburger was an American post-minimalist composer, conductor, editor-publisher, music professor, and writer. He was the founder and music director of the San Francisco Composers Chamber Orchestra (SFCCO) and was known for his eclectic and innovative musical style.
Alburger studied at Swarthmore College , the Paris Conservatory, Princeton University (M.A.), King's College London (Ph.D.), and the University of California, Berkeley (D.M.A). He was renowned for his knowledge of diverse musical styles, incorporating elements of classical, jazz, rock, and world music into his compositions.
Some of his notable works include the opera "Henry Miller in Brooklyn," the choral piece "Cantos I-IV," and the string quartet "Knotted Silk." He was also a prolific writer, penning articles on music theory and composition for various publications.
Alburger was highly regarded in the American music community and received numerous commissions and awards throughout his career. He passed away on June 18, 2023, leaving behind a significant legacy in the world of contemporary classical music.
