Maria Brizzi Giorgi was an Italian composer born in Florence, Italy in 1939. She was a prolific composer, creating over 400 works throughout her career, ranging from orchestral and chamber music to opera and sacred music.

Giorgi studied at the Florence Music Conservatory and later received a diploma from the Milan Conservatory. She also studied with various renowned composers including Luigi Dallapiccola and Goffredo Petrassi.

In addition to her composing, Giorgi was also a dedicated educator, teaching music theory and composition at the Florence Music Conservatory for over 30 years. Many of her students have gone on to become successful composers and performers themselves.

Giorgi's compositions reflect her passion for combining traditional Italian music with more contemporary techniques. She often used a narrative or storytelling approach to her pieces, incorporating symbolism and themes of mythology and religion.

Throughout her career, Giorgi received numerous honors and awards, including the prestigious Grawemeyer Award in Music Composition in 1997. Despite her many accolades, Giorgi remained humble and dedicated to her craft throughout her life.

Giorgi passed away in 2020 at the age of 81, leaving behind a legacy of beautiful compositions and a lasting impact on the world of classical music.
