Bonds was a child prodigy who began piano lessons at the age of four and later studied composition under Florence Price. In 1929, she graduated from high school and enrolled at Northwestern University with a scholarship for both piano and composition.
Bonds' music blended the classical and folk musical traditions, incorporating elements of spirituals, blues, and jazz. She often drew inspiration from African-American poets and writers such as Langston Hughes and W.E.B. Du Bois. Bonds became a prominent figure in the African American musical community and was also a part of the Harlem Renaissance.
One of her notable compositions was "The Ballad of the Brown King," which she co-wrote with poet Langston Hughes. The piece was performed at Carnegie Hall in 1954, and it quickly became one of Bonds' most celebrated works.
Bonds was also a renowned pianist and performed extensively throughout her career. She earned a reputation as an outstanding performer of contemporary music, and her recitals were characterized by a sensitive interpretation of her own works and those of other composers.
