Manuel Rodrigues Coelho was a prominent Portuguese organist and composer born in Elvas in 1555. He is widely recognized as one of the key figures in the early development of keyboard music in Portugal. Coelho began his musical studies under the tutelage of his father, who was also a musician, and later continued his education under the Italian composer Giovanni de Macque.
Coelho was appointed the organist at the Monastery of Salvador in Olivença at the age of 16, and later went on to serve as the organist at the cathedral of Badajoz. He is also known to have served as the organist at the Royal Chapel in Lisbon at some point in his career.
Among his works, Coelho is best known for "Flores de Música para o órgão", a collection of organ music that was published posthumously by his son, Manuel Rodrigues Coelho Junior, in 1620. "Flores de Música" contains a wide range of pieces, from simple arrangements of popular songs to complex polyphonic works. The collection also includes a "Prologue" and "Particular Warnings" written by the composer himself.
Despite his contributions to the development of keyboard music, Coelho's works were largely forgotten after his death until the 20th century, when his music was rediscovered and published by various musicologists. Today, Coelho's music is recognized as an important part of the early Portuguese Baroque repertoire and is still performed and recorded by many organists around the world.
