Lodovico Grossi da Viadana was an Italian composer and Franciscan friar who lived during the late Renaissance period. He was born in Viadana, a town in the province of Mantua, Italy in 1560 and was also known by his monastic name, Fra Giovan Girolamo da Viadana.

Viadana is best known for his contributions to the development of basso continuo, which refers to the technique of providing a continuous bass line throughout a piece of music, sometimes including chord symbols that allowed for improvisation. He is credited with being one of the first composers to use this technique in his compositions, which greatly influenced Western music.

Viadana lived and worked in several Italian cities throughout his lifetime, including Mantua, Parma, and Venice. He served as the maestro di cappella (director of music) at various churches and cathedrals, including the church of Santa Maria dei Servi in Mantua and the Basilica of San Giovanni e Paolo in Venice.

Viadana's most famous work is his collection of 100 sacred concertos, titled "Centra concerti ecclesiastici," which he published in Venice in 1602. This collection received widespread popularity and was a significant influence on the development of the Baroque concerto.

Viadana passed away in 1627 in Gualtieri, a town in the province of Reggio Emilia, Italy. Today, his music continues to be performed and studied by musicians and scholars around the world, and he is remembered as one of the most important and innovative composers of his time.
