Miranda began writing his first musical, In the Heights, while he was a sophomore at Wesleyan University. He wrote the music and lyrics and also starred in the show when it premiered off-Broadway in 2007. In the Heights went on to win four Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and was later adapted into a feature film in 2021.

Miranda gained international fame for his next project, Hamilton, which premiered on Broadway in 2015. He wrote the book, music, and lyrics for the show, which tells the story of founding father Alexander Hamilton through a blend of hip hop, R&B, and traditional showtunes.
