Lex van Delden (1919-1988) was a Dutch composer ), writer, and a hero of the Dutch resistance during World War II. He started his musical journey at the Municipal University of Amsterdam where he enrolled in 1938. Lex's student orchestra was led by Nico Richter , fellow medical student, and composer. Later, he received composition lessons from Willem Pijper, one of the most important Dutch composers of the time.
Lex van Delden composed music for various types of ensembles, including orchestras, choirs, chamber groups, and solo instruments. He also wrote music for film and television. His compositions often featured tonal melodies and harmonies with characteristic rhythmic vitality.
In the 1950s and 60s, Lex van Delden was one of the most frequently played composers of his generation. His compositions, such as the "Concerto for Harmonica and Orchestra," the "Cello Sonata," and the "Suite for Wind Quintet," were performed widely in the Netherlands and abroad.
Lex was also a writer and published several books, including "Forbidden Music Regained," which tells the stories of composers banned by the Nazis during World War II.
Aside from his musical pursuits, Lex was a member of the Dutch resistance against Nazi occupation during World War II. He worked as a courier for the resistance and helped smuggle Jewish children out of the country to save them from the concentration camps.
