Full biography Delia Derbyshire
Delia Ann Derbyshire (5 May 1937 - 3 July 2001) was an English musician and composer of electronic music. She is best known for her work with the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, where she created the original theme music for the popular British TV show Doctor Who.
Derbyshire's musical career began in the early 1960s, when she was working as a trainee studio manager at the BBC. Encouraged by her supervisor, she began experimenting with electronic music, using reel-to-reel tape machines and other equipment that was available in the Radiophonic Workshop. Her work quickly gained recognition, and in 1963 she was asked to create the theme music for Doctor Who, which became one of the most iconic TV theme tunes in history.
In addition to her work on Doctor Who, Derbyshire also collaborated with other musicians and artists over the course of her career. She worked with the experimental music collective Unit Delta Plus, as well as with composers Peter Zinovieff and Brian Hodgson. She also created music and sound effects for various TV and radio programs, and produced her own experimental music under the pseudonym of Li De La Russe.
Derbyshire's pioneering work in electronic music has had a lasting impact on the field, and she is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of electronic music. Her work continues to inspire new generations of musicians and composers, and her contributions to the field are celebrated in various festivals and events around the world. Despite facing many challenges and obstacles during her career, Derbyshire remained committed to her music, and her legacy continues to live on today.
