Short bio Lev Knipper
Full biography Lev Knipper
Lev Konstantinovich Knipper was a Soviet and Russian composer , born on December 12, 1898, in the city of Tiflis (now Tbilisi), Georgia, which was then part of the Russian Empire. Knipper was of partial German descent, and his uncle was married to the famous actress Olga Knipper-Chekhova, who was the wife of Anton Chekhov.
Knipper studied music in Moscow and was taught by prominent composers such as Nikolai Myaskovsky and Reinhold Glière. He also had connections to the Soviet secret police, serving as an agent for the OGPU/NKVD.
Knipper wrote music for a wide range of media, including film, theater, and ballet, as well as orchestral and vocal works. He is perhaps best known for his composition "Polyushko-polye," which became a popular Soviet song during World War II. Knipper also wrote the score for Sergei Eisenstein's film "Alexander Nevsky."
Despite his success as a composer, Knipper was acutely aware of the difficulties faced by Soviet composers and attempted to find a voice for them. He once wrote, "We are not free, but we are artists, and we must find our freedom within ourselves."
Knipper passed away on August 24, 1974, in Moscow, at the age of 75. Today, he is remembered as an important figure in Soviet music, whose work continues to be performed and appreciated around the world.
