Short bio Leo Sowerby
Full biography Leo Sowerby
Leo Sowerby (1895-1968) was an American composer and organist who made significant contributions to classical music in the 20th century. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Sowerby studied composition at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago. He demonstrated an early aptitude for music, and by the age of 18, he had composed several works for organ, including his Symphony in G for organ and orchestra.
Sowerby was an accomplished musician and composed a large variety of works throughout his career. He was a prolific writer of organ music and choral works and composed several concerti for piano and cello. Sowerby's orchestral music often featured jazz elements, and he was particularly known for his works for jazz orchestra, which were popular in the 1920s.
One of his major compositions was the Symphony No. 2, which was commissioned by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1927. The piece helped to establish Sowerby's reputation as a major American composer. In addition to his work as a composer, Sowerby was also an accomplished organist and served as the organist-choirmaster at St. James Episcopal Cathedral in Chicago from 1927 until his retirement in 1962.
Sowerby was the recipient of many awards throughout his career, including the Pulitzer Prize for music in 1946 for his cantata "The Canticle of the Sun." He was also elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters and awarded an honorary Doctor of Music degree from his alma mater, the American Conservatory of Music.
Despite his significant contributions to American music, Sowerby's music fell out of favor with audiences and critics in the post-World War II era, which led to a decline in his reputation. However, in recent years, there has been renewed interest in his music, and recordings of his works have been released by several prominent classical music labels. Today, Sowerby is considered one of the most important American composers of the early 20th century.
