Karl-Birger Blomdahl was a Swedish composer and music educator who lived from 1916 to 1968. He is considered one of the most significant Swedish composers of the 20th century. Blomdahl studied at the Stockholm Conservatory and worked as a radio producer for Radio Sweden from 1942 to 1958.

Blomdahl was a prolific composer and his output included orchestral and choral works, operas, electronic music, and music for film and theater. He was known for his experimental approach to music composition, particularly in his use of electronic music, which he began exploring in the 1950s. His interest in electronic music led him to create the first electronic music studio in Sweden in 1960, which he directed until his death in 1968.

One of Blomdahl's most famous works is his opera Aniara, which is considered a masterpiece of 20th-century opera. Aniara is based on a poem by Swedish writer Harry Martinson and is a stark, powerful tale of humanity's struggles with isolation and loss set in space. Blomdahl incorporated electronic music into the opera's score, making use of the newest technology available to him at the time.

In addition to his work as a composer, Blomdahl was also an influential music educator. He served as a professor of composition at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm from 1952 until his death in 1968. Many of his students went on to become prominent composers in their own right.

Overall, Karl-Birger Blomdahl was a pioneering composer and educator who made significant contributions to 20th-century music. His experimental approach to composition and his innovative use of technology continue to inspire and influence musicians today.
