Jürg Baur (November 11, 1918 – January 31, 2010) was a German composer and teacher of classical music. He was born in Düsseldorf, Germany, and studied composition with Philipp Jarnach at the Musikhochschule Köln. Between 1948 and 1983, he taught at the Musikhochschule Freiburg.
Baur's music is characterized by an eclectic mix of styles, incorporating elements of twelve-tone music, serialism, and minimalism. He composed music in a variety of genres, including opera, choral music, orchestral music, and music for chamber ensembles. His works have been performed widely in Europe, Asia, and North America.
In addition to his work as a composer, Baur was also a respected teacher of composition. His students included notable composers such as Wolfgang Rihm and Hans-Jürgen von Bose.
Baur's notable works include the operas "Der Roman mit dem Kontrabass" and "Incontri," as well as the chamber works "Drei Fantasien" for guitar and "Streichquartett." He was also responsible for completing several unfinished works by other composers , including a piano concerto by Robert Schumann and a cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach.
Jürg Baur died on January 31, 2010, at the age of 91. His contributions to the world of classical music, both through his compositions and his teachings, continue to be celebrated today.
