Joseph Quesnel (1746-1809) was a French Canadian composer , poet, playwright, and merchant. He was noted for his contributions to Canadian culture and was one of the first composers to create operas in Canada.

Quesnel was born on November 15, 1746, in Saint-Malo, France, and later moved to Quebec, where he became a successful merchant. In addition to his business pursuits, he was also an accomplished musician, playing the violin and composing music for various productions.

Among his works were two operas , Colas et Colinette and Lucas et Cecile, which are considered important works in the history of Canadian music. He is also known for his poetry and plays, which were often performed by amateur actors in Quebec City in the late 18th century.

Quesnel was not without controversy, however, as he was also involved in the slave trade. He owned slaves and was involved in the transportation of enslaved persons from Africa to the French colonies in the Caribbean. This aspect of his life is often overlooked in discussions of his contributions to Canadian culture.

Despite his involvement in the slave trade, Joseph Quesnel remains an important figure in the history of Canadian music and theater. His works helped to establish a Canadian cultural identity and have continued to inspire and entertain audiences to this day.
