Full biography Joseph-Nicolas-Pancrace Royer
Joseph-Nicolas-Pancrace Royer was a French composer and harpsichordist who lived in the 18th century (1705-1755). He was born in Turin, Italy, but spent most of his life in Paris, France. Royer was considered to be one of the leading composers of his time, particularly in the genre of French baroque music.
Royer is best known for his works for the harpsichord, which included a number of solo pieces, chamber music, and operas. His music was highly regarded for its complexity and delicacy of touch, as well as his ability to blend French and Italian styles of music.
Royer's most famous work is his opera, "Pygmalion," which was first performed in 1748 at the Opéra-Comique in Paris. The opera tells the story of a sculptor who falls in love with a statue he has created, which then comes to life. "Pygmalion" was a great success, and helped to establish Royer's reputation as a composer.
Royer was also an accomplished performer, and was a member of the Concert Spirituel, a highly regarded concert series in Paris. He played the harpsichord and conducted many of his own works at the concerts, to the delight of his audiences.
Sadly, Royer's life was cut short at the age of 50, when he died of a stroke. But his music has endured, and is still performed and admired by musicians and audiences today. Joseph-Nicolas-Pancrace Royer was a true master of his craft, and his contributions to French baroque music will be remembered for generations to come.
