Joseph Barnby (1838-1896) was an accomplished English composer, conductor, and organist. Born in York, England, he showed musical aptitude from a young age and entered the choir of York Minster when he was only seven years old. He later became the organist at several notable churches in London, including St. Andrew's Church and St. Anne's Church.
In addition to his work as an organist, Barnby was a prolific composer, with over 200 works to his name. He was particularly well-known for his choral music, which was popular in England during the late 19th century. Some of his most famous works include "Sweet and Low" and "Oh Perfect Love," which is still frequently played at weddings today.
Barnby was also a highly regarded conductor and led several choral groups during his lifetime, including the Royal Albert Hall Choral Society and the Leeds Festival Chorus. He was instrumental in popularizing choral music in England, and his contributions to the genre earned him several honors, including a knighthood in 1892.
