John Holmes was an American composer who lived from 1920 to 2011. Throughout his career, he created a large and diverse array of works, including more than 200 pieces of music for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, and orchestras. His music was often characterized by its use of rich harmonies, complex rhythms, and innovative textures.

Born in Holbrook, Massachusetts, Holmes showed an early interest in music, studying violin as a child. Later on, he also learned to play the piano and began to experiment with composition. He attended the New England Conservatory of Music, where he earned his Bachelor's degree in composition in 1942. He then went on to earn a Master's degree in composition from the same institution in 1943.

During his long and productive career, Holmes received a number of prestigious honors and awards. He was a Fellow of the MacDowell Colony, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Fromm Foundation. He also received grants and commissions from institutions such as the National Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Some of Holmes' best-known works include his "Sonata for Trumpet and Piano," "Symphony No. 2," and "Sextet for Flute, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Violin, Cello, and Piano." Despite his prolific output and critical acclaim, however, Holmes remained relatively unknown outside of academic circles and never achieved widespread fame. Nevertheless, his contributions to American music are significant, and his compositions continue to be performed and studied today.
