Johannes Nucius was a German composer and music theorist who lived during the late Renaissance period. He was born Johannes Nussbaum on September 28, 1556, in Neukirchen-Vluyn, which is now part of Germany. He was commonly known by the Latin version of his name - Johannes Nucius.

Nucius was educated at the University of Marburg, where he studied theology, philosophy, and music. While at the university, he became interested in Protestant church music, and he soon began composing his own pieces. He became particularly interested in counterpoint, which would later become a significant influence on his compositional style.

In 1578, he was appointed as the cantor of the St. Mary's Church in Neuss, where he worked until his death in 1620. During his time as the cantor, he composed numerous sacred choral works, many of which are still performed and studied by music scholars and choral groups today.
