Short bio Johann Heinrich Buttstett
Full biography Johann Heinrich Buttstett
Johann Heinrich Buttstett was a German composer, organist, and music theorist who lived in the late Baroque period. He was born in 1666 in the town of Bindersleben, which is located in present-day Thuringia, Germany.
Buttstett was known for his music proficiency and excellent composition skills. He began his career as a church organist in Erfurt when he was only 18 years old. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented musician and was soon appointed as the principal organist at the St Bartholomew's church in the city.
In addition to his duties as an organist, Buttstett also became a prolific composer of church music. He created many vocal and instrumental works, many of which were for liturgical purposes. Some of his most notable compositions include hymns, chorales, and motets.
Despite his success as a composer, Buttstett is best known for his contributions as a music theorist. He published several works on the subject, including "Musicalische Trachtenbuch," a theoretical treatise on Baroque counterpoint. This book is considered one of the most significant works on the subject of music theory from the Baroque period.
Buttstett continued to work as an organist and composer until his death in 1727. Although he is not as well-known as some of his contemporaries, his contributions to Baroque music and theory are highly regarded by scholars and music enthusiasts alike.
