Full biography Johann Brandl
Johann Evangelist Brandl was a German composer who lived from 1760 to 1837. He was known for his symphonies, chamber music, and concertos, and was active in the late classical period of classical music. Brandl was born in Augsburg and began his musical education there, later moving to Vienna where he studied with composer Johann Georg Albrechtsberger.
Brandl's music was highly regarded in his time, with his Symphonie concertante op. 8 being particularly well-received for its use of contrasting timbres and its virtuosic solo parts. Brandl also composed for a variety of instruments, including the bassoon, violin, cello, and clarinet.
Interestingly, the Viennese popular song "The Old Refrain" is often attributed to Fritz Kreisler, but is actually a transcription of an earlier work by Brandl. Brandl's other notable works include three method books for bassoon and various pieces for organ.
While Brandl is not as well-known today as some of his contemporaries , his contributions to classical music are still appreciated and his works are occasionally performed and recorded.
