Glenn Branca (October 6 , 1948 - May 13, 2018) was an American avant-garde composer , guitarist, and creator of unique musical instruments. Branca is best known for his music that blended genres, often featuring massed amplified guitars. He was a notable figure in the no wave music scene of the late 1970s and early 1980s in New York City.
Branca started his music career as a member of the avant-garde theater troupe The Theater of Eternal Music, which was led by minimalist composer La Monte Young. He soon became interested in creating his own music and formed his own group, the Glenn Branca Ensemble, in the late 1970s. The Ensemble was known for its use of massed electric guitars, creating a unique and intense sonic experience.
Branca also created a number of unique musical instruments, including the "mallet guitar" and the "harmonics guitar," which he used in his compositions. He continued to push the boundaries of music throughout his career, experimenting with different styles and approaches.
Branca's music and approach have had a significant impact on experimental and avant-garde music, inspiring many other musicians and composers.
