Johann Adolph Scheibe was a German-Danish composer, music critic, and theorist who lived from 1708 to 1776. He was known for his significant contributions to the development of musical theory during the mid-18th century. Although he started his career as a composer, he later became more involved in music journalism, writing critiques of the works of other composers and promoting his own ideas about music theory.

Scheibe studied music in Leipzig and Dresden before moving to Copenhagen in 1737. In Denmark, he became a prominent figure in the musical scene and was appointed as the music director for the court of King Christian VI. However, he fell out of favor with the king and was dismissed in 1745.

Afterward, Scheibe moved to Hamburg and continued to write, compose, and teach music. He became a leading musical journalist and contributed to the development of music criticism as a discipline. His writings were known for their sharp criticisms and emphasis on the importance of music theory.

Scheibe's music was influenced by the traditions of Bach and Telemann, but he also embraced the emerging musical trends of his time, such as the galant style. He wrote numerous works, including opera, cantatas, and instrumental pieces.

Despite his significant contributions to music theory and composition, Scheibe's reputation suffered after his death. Many of his works were forgotten or lost, and his criticisms of other composers were considered harsh and unfair. However, in recent years, there has been a renewed interest in his music and his contributions to the development of music theory.
