Short bio Johan Agrell
Full biography Johan Agrell
Johan Joachim Agrell (1 February 1701 - 19 January 1765) was a German/Swedish baroque composer. He was born in Löth parish, Östergötland, Sweden and was a violin and keyboard virtuoso, composer, and theorist. Agrell was a brilliant Baroque composer in whose works many of the styles of the time can be found. He was a Kapellmeister in Nuremberg from 1746 until his death in 1765.
Johan Agrell wrote occasional vocal works and numerous symphonies , harpsichord concertos and sonatas, many of which were published. He was fluent in the northern and central German-Church styles, and his music serves as an important bridge between the Baroque and Classical periods. There is a portrait of him, which is the only known portrait we have of the composer, in an engraving by V. D. Haecht in 1741.
Today, many of Agrell's works are still performed by orchestras and ensembles around the world. His compositions are generally very well crafted, with lively rhythmic themes that demonstrate his contrapuntal skill, and his harmonic vocabulary is extremely colorful. His music is definitely worth checking out for those who are interested in Baroque music.
