Jean Victor Arthur Guillou (18 April 1930 – 26 January 2019) was a French composer , organist, pianist, and pedagogue. He was the Titular Organist at Saint Eustache in Paris and was well-known for his groundbreaking work as an organist and composer.
As an organist , Guillou was known for his virtuosic and improvisational skills on the instrument. He also helped design and build organs, and made scores of recordings as a soloist. His influence as a performer was felt around the world, and he was recognized as one of the greatest organists of his time.
As a composer, Jean Guillou wrote music for a range of instruments and ensembles. He explored the sonorities of the organ in combination with other instruments , such as the cello in his Fantasie Concertante pour violoncelle et orgue. He was also known for incorporating innovative techniques, such as electronic sounds, into his compositions.
Guillou was a prolific writer and poet, and published several volumes of his work throughout his life. He was also a respected pedagogue, teaching at several prestigious institutions throughout his career and influencing generations of musicians.
In January 2019, Jean Guillou passed away at the age of 88. He left behind a legacy as a groundbreaking performer, composer, and teacher, with an extensive catalog of music that is still being performed and studied today.
